Time lapse video using a canon digital camera and adobe premier elements?

How do I make a one minute time lapse movie using a cheap digital camera and adobe premiere elements. Would I tape an object for 2 minutes or so and then speed it up in the editing process using the “fast motion” effect???? I want it to go very fast though, and I am not sure if adobe premiere elements will fulfill that need. If anyone has any ideas, please answer!!!
