Is there really any difference between a cheap SLR digital camera and a good regular canon digital camera?

cheap canon digital camera
Marie asked:

I have a canon powershot digital camera SD770 & I was looking into the SLRs.. I’m not a professional photographer, but I would like to step it up with photography… get my pictures more crisp, better quality, all the while using an easy camera..

So I was looking at the cheaper Nikons.. d40 or the d60…
are the pictures that come out of these cameras a lot better than a good digital camera like the one I have?

Any advice in general?

    The Geek Says:

The Canon SD770 is 10.1 megapixels, while the Nikon d40 is 6MP. The d60 is 10mp. What this means is the Canon SD770 and the Nikon D60 output should be pretty much the same while the d40 resolution would be lower. Would you notice the difference? With a really sharp eye you may see the difference.
