Nikon’s advertising claims the Nikon D90 SLR can capture cinematic video at 24 frames-per-second (FPS) and resolution of 720p.  Consumer Reports latest issue says their test show flickering with horizontal panning or horizontal subject movement.

It is true the D90 will support 720p but images captured at that setting show far less detail even in excellent lighting conditions, than most HD camcorders capture.  Image quality was worse than even the lowest rated HD camcorder.  The image quality was close to VHS tape quality.

The bottom line is that video performance that is barely middling at best, the D90 is no substitue for a decent HD camcorder.
