HDD Camcorders
HDD Camcorders record on hard disk drives. This eliminates the need for buying media, however there are a couple of disadvantages to HDD Camcorders.
With standard camcorders as long as your camcorder battery has power, and you have tape, you can continue recording. With HDD camcorders, when you run out of disk space, you must download to a PC or a laptop to clear space.
Another downside is transferring to a PC. Digital Camcorders that use tape as a recording media usually have an IEEE1394 port (aka Firewire). Nearly all PCs and notebooks have a Firewire connection. With an HDD Camcorder, you must transfer via USB which is significantly slower. There are those that would have you believe USB2 is as fast as Firewire. Don't believe it. It simply isn't true and USB is even slower..
